As back-to-school season approaches, I'm reminded of a patient story from my residency that continues to reinforce the value of getting children in for comprehensive eye exams early and consistently.
My co-residents and I worked with two elementary school-aged patients with ocular albinism who had spent years searching for answers. By the time they reached us, they were just learning to read and write, yet their vision challenges were creating barriers at a critical stage of development. We were able to provide low vision devices, glasses, and vision therapy, then follow their progress over several years. Watching their confidence and visual function improve was incredibly rewarding.
What I remember most, though, is the parents' reaction. They had spent years advocating for their children and navigating the healthcare system. Seeing things finally start to click for their kids reinforced how meaningful timely intervention can be.
As ODs, we know that children often don't recognize when they're not seeing clearly, which is why the back-to-school season is an important opportunity to encourage annual eye exams. Routine care allows us to identify concerns earlier and help ensure vision isn't standing in the way of a child's ability to learn, participate, and thrive in the classroom.
That's also why I value the role VSP plays in connecting patients with care. Vision benefits encourage patients to schedule routine exams, creating opportunities for us to identify unmet needs, build lasting relationships, and make a meaningful difference in our patients' lives.
As Eye See It, those two patients are a reminder that every exam has the potential to change a life. Sometimes all it takes is getting the right patient into the chair at the right time.
