VSP Ophthalmic Product Formulary and Plan Changes

The ophthalmic formulary changes originally set to start September 1, 2020 have been delayed until January 1, 2021. Learn more.

On June 1, VSP® announced formulary changes and Vision Care plan changes that add value for insurance clients and increase our ability to win and retain contracts that put patients in your practices.

Patient access for VSP network doctors remains our top priority. We are entering an unparalleled time of competition for employer contracts that represent millions of patients that visit VSP network doctors each year.  VSP is accelerating efforts and taking steps to deliver greater value to clients and members and further controlling costs in the formulary to continue winning and retaining clients to keep these patients where they belong – VSP network practices. Changes include:

  • Eliminating Lab Routing for VSP Choice and VSP Advantage Plans in California, Oregon, Washington, Ohio, and Florida, as well as FEDVIP routing in all states. Effective June 1, 2020.
  • Guaranteed Member Pricing on VSP Choice Plan Lens Enhancements, including digital aspheric, high-index, polarized, near variable focus lenses, as well as others. Effective September 1, 2020.
  • The VSP Ophthalmic Product Formulary that is administered by Plexus will include preferred and non-preferred categories for anti-reflective coating, progressive, and digital single vision (including anti-fatigue) lens products for all plans. Effective date has been changed from September 1, 2020 to January 1, 2021. 
  • The new VSP® Exam Plus Savings PlanTM product, which combines the low-cost covered-in full VSP Exam Plus benefit, covered-in-full Exam Plus benefit along with the enhanced value of the Vision Savings Pass program. Effective September 1, 2020.
